Potbelly Studios: Home Recording Blog

Okay, great, another home recording blog, you’re saying. How can this be different from all the rest?

Well, I’m taking a different path. Most of the blogs you’ve read are headed up by people who have been entrenched in their livelihood for many years. A lot of them know their craft inside and out. The problem is what some call the curse of knowledge.

What’s the curse of knowledge? It’s when you know something so well, the concepts are so ingrained into your soul that you speak on a higher plain than those around you. For example, did you ever pick up an owner’s manual to a new piece of equipment or software you just purchased and after reading it was even more confused about what you’ve got and how it works? That’s because it was written by techies and engineers who know everything about that product. They conceived it, built it and sadly, wrote the manual for it.

That brings me back to the different path I mentioned earlier. I’m not a techie or a gear-head. I’m a frustrated musician, like you, that wants to learn more about getting my songs recorded the best way possible. I’m hardly rich, far from it. And I don’t have tons of times to devote to learning everything. I’ve got a wife, a job, a mortgage and a life like the rest of you. But, I’ve also got a burning desire to create.

So, that’s what this blog is about: the journey and whatever I learn along the way that I can pass on to you.

The format is simple: it’s liquid. One day I’ll be talking about some gear I’ve run across, another day I may be grumbling about why something isn’t working the way I want it to work. Some days I’ll be showcasing what I’ve recently recorded and spend time explaining what I did to get it done. Other days I might decide to do a microphone shoot out trying to figure out which mic records a guitar amp the best. Who knows? I’ll let the blog take it’s own form and, in time and with your help, we’ll create something that will help others starting off.

Oh, yeah… I said, “with your help.” I’m not planning on doing this alone. Granted, there won’t be a helluva lotta people looking at this blog in the beginning, but hopefully, in time there will. And, trust me, I do believe in crowd-sourcing. Your opinions, ideas, commentary, whatever will be greatly appreciated.

So, that’s what this site is about: a learning experience for both you and me. I hope you’ll enjoy it and get as much out of it as I will.
