In order to talk about Potbelly Studios: Home Recording Blog, I guess I should start this About page off with some background on me, your intrepid blogger.
I’m Jay Walsh. At this writing, a 48-year-old musician and graphic designer for a local newspaper. I live with my beautiful wife, Stephanie in Southern Arizona with our dog, Mitzi (a white Tibetan Terrier) and our 18-year-old potbellied pig, Soo (short for Sweet Sooey Blue Eye and, yes, that’s where the name Potbelly Studios came from).
Throughout my life I’ve worn many hats. So far they’ve been:
- Bass player in too numerous to name rock bands
- Live Sound Man
- Real Estate Agent
- Property Manager
- Bartender
- Handyman
- Parts Runner
- Book Store Clerk
- Video Store Clerk
- Graphic Designer
- Illustrator
- Web Designer
- Newspaper Publisher
- Wedding Photographer
- Videographer
And, currently I can add senior designer, poker player, songwriter, podcaster and blogger. Hopefully, soon to add, audio engineer.
One of my current gigs, as mentioned above is working with an excellent piano teacher named, Dan Starr on our site 5minutepianolessons.com We’ve also created a weekly podcast to go along with it called Planet Piano that you can download from iTunes. Even if you’re not into learning how to play the piano, you can listen to the progression of the shows and how we went from a couple of cheap mics, recording in my office closet, to the setup I use today.
Except for a few of the early gigs I did, you can say I preferred to stick with the creative aspects of a job. That’s what I’ve always found the most fun. I get bored easily if something is routine or mundane. I like the idea of the blank canvas and creating something from nothing.
I also like to think that I take the knowledge from a previous career to enhance the next one. It’s not that I’m flakey and can’t hold a job. It just seems to be a natural progression of where life is taking me.
Now, it seems that I’ve come full-circle. The technology has caught up to the way I think and now I can borrow from all of those past career choices to create my music and write this blog.
What this blog will be about is:
- Recording techniques
- Reviews
- Software tips and tricks
- Equipment shootouts
- Community building
- And, in some cases, just general grumbling when something doesn’t go right.
This is going to be a journey and I hope you’ll enjoy the ride.
I know I will.
